808 PureView Driver

The Nokia 808 PureView mobile phone is one of the better looking phones in the Nokia stable. I have always liked the Lumia range of mobile phones as it is clean and square. The PureView is a turn from the normal for Nokia with a very smart looking phone that actually feels very good in your hand.

The only downside for me is that protrusion at the rear where the camera is located. It makes the phone feel unbalanced in the hand. The specs of the Nokia 808 PureView reminds me of another phone in the Lumia range called the Nokia Lumia 1020 mobile phone. Its all high-end from end to end and the PureView is a cut under this in terms of what it offers. The Nokia 808 PureView does not offer 4G and only offers the 2G and 3G network abilities..

Mar 06, 2012 Last week Nokia Connects played host to a virtual Q&A with Nokia 808 PureView Product Managers Damian Dinning, Andrew Flowers and Vesa Jutila where they answered your questions on the ins and outs of the amazing PureView technology. Here is a lowdown of the questions and answers that came up during the session.

.

Released in 2012 the Nokia 808 comes with a AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with 16M colors which is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass and also comes with the Nokia ClearBlack display much like the Nokia Lumia 710 and the Nokia Lumia 1020 mobile phones. The sound on the phone comes with the usual and standard vibration; MP3 and WAV ringtones however this mobile phone also includes Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby headphone enhancement which comes as standard on all the highend mobile phones from Nokia such as the Nokia 625 phone.

The phone comes with a microSD slot to upgrade the memory to 32GB and it also comes with 16 GB storage, 1 GB ROM and 512 MB of RAM. Data communication wise it comes with GPRS Class 33, Edge Class 33. The speed off from this phone is HSDPA at 14.4 Mbps and also HSUPA at 5.76 Mbps. There is Bluetooth and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, DLNA with UPnP technology.

The camera on this phone if highend being a Carl Zeiss 41 MegaPixels (38 MP effective, 7152 x 5368 pixels) with autofocus and a Xenon flash. The 1/1.2” camera sensor gives you clear crisp pictures. The large framed video plays very well at 1080p@30fps which gives you excellent video with lossless digital zoom. There is also a basic secondary camera on this phone.

The Nokia Belle OS powers the phone with an older 1.3 GHz ARM 11 and Broadcom BCM2763 chipset to round it off. It is a bit underspec considering the type of camera on the phone. HTML5 surfing, GPS and FM radio is standard. with a standby time of just under 3 weeks and a talktime of 11 hours the Nokia 808 does very well. Even before the announcement of Nokia Lumia 920 with PureView Camera technology, Nokia gave me a Nokia 808 PureView device for a trial. I used the device for about 2 weeks instead of one my Windows Phone devices. Nokia 808 PureView can be used as a poster child for many reasons. One, a great hardware can be brought down by a poor software experience. Two, Nokia still has lots of innovations within it. If you are a camera lover, then this a must have mobile device for you. If you are looking for a decent smartphone, please forget about this and consider one of the Nokia Lumia Windows Phone device.

I really hope Nokia ports features such as PureView Over sampling technology, Rich Recording technology, support for Dolby Digital Plus Audio, etc, to Lumia Windows Phone devices soon. Do you miss anything from Nokia 808Â PureView on your Lumia Windows Phone device?

Check out my impressions about it after the break.

Hardware:Â

Nokia 808 PureView feels solid in hand and it is sturdily built just as you expect from a Nokia Smartphone. Since the device is made of plastic, it weighs only 169gms whereas its thickness ranges from 14mm to 18mm. As you can notice in the image above, there is a huge bump in the back due to its 41MP PureView camera sensor. It has a 4inch AMOLED display with 360X640 resolution. I don’t understand Nokia’s decision behind this low resolution display for a highly media focused device. It sports all other regular ports, volume and dedicated camera keys along with standard Symbian buttons.

Audio:Â

The audio technology built into this PureView device is powered by Dolby Digital Plus so you can enjoy your music on 5.1 channel sound experience. The loudspeaker in 808 PureView produces very loud and clear sound. It also features Rich Recording which has the ability to record sound without distortion at around 140-145db and the Nokia 808 PureView records at volumes four times louder than conventional microphones.

Camera:Â

The Nokia 808 PureView features a 41 megapixel sensor powered by Carl Zeiss optics. More than the hardware abilities, it now incorporates Nokia’s new pixel oversampling technology. Using Pixel Oversampling, you will have the ability to zoom without loss of clarity and capture seven pixels of information, condensing into one pixel for the sharpest images imaginable. On video recording side, Nokia 808 PureView also includes full HD 1080p video recording and playback with 4X lossless zoom.

After reading such high specs, my expectations on the image and video quality from this device went much higher. And after using the device for more than 2 weeks, I can tell you that the device holds true on its promise. The images just look stunning with great color and sharpness. I can easily say that this is the best Mobile Phone Camera that exists in the market right now. The video recording features 6X lossless zoom at 720p and 4X lossless zoom at 1080p resolution which produces some great videos.

Performance/Software Experience:Â

I’m a Windows Phone user since 2010. Imagine how I would have felt using Symbian device today. In one word I can describe the software experience on this PureView 808 device, It is “Unusable”. Even in 2012, there is a lag in UI throughout the Symbian Belle OS. Its slow, becomes unresponsive at times. As a Windows Phone user, I can never digest such software experience. The soft keyboard is one of the worst I’ve ever used which ruins every part of the OS whenever it gets loaded up. And I don’t even want to speak about its native browser which is terrible.

One positive thing about the 808 PureView’s software experience is the availability of Nokia apps such as Nokia Maps with full offline navigation, Nokia Transit, Nokia Music, etc,.

Others:Â

Nokia 808 has 16GB inbuilt storage with SD card expansion facility. It also has 1400mAh battery which is pretty enough for using this device for a whole day. It features a pentaband 3G network support which should be more helpful for travellers.
